Discovering Bolsover Castle

We are lucky to be (finally) seeing the sunshine, and it’s got us thinking how to make the most of this beautiful weather week. Who knows how long it will last! One of our favourite places to visit is Bolsover Castle, which is nestled amongst the rolling hills of Derbyshire, and ideally located near to our Sherwood Fields development.

This captivating castle, often described as a "Little Versailles," offers visitors a unique journey through time, appealing to all ages. Here's why a visit to Bolsover Castle is a perfect experience in the sunshine:

1. A Fascinating History: Bolsover Castle was constructed in the 17th century by Sir Charles Cavendish, a prominent figure during the reign of King James I. It evolved from a medieval fortress into a luxurious country house, providing a remarkable snapshot of England's transition from the Tudor era to the Stuart period.

2. The Riding House: One of Bolsover's unique features is its Riding House, considered one of the earliest indoor riding schools in the country. There are regular dressage shows, and there is also a performance scheduled for Saturday 9th September, see here for more information.

3. Enchanting Gardens: The castle is surrounded by beautiful terraced gardens, complete with fountains, statues, and breathtaking views of the Derbyshire countryside. It's a tranquil place to explore, offering the perfect backdrop for a stroll and a picnic.

4. Impressive Views: Climb to the castle's wall walk, and you'll be rewarded with stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. With the Derbyshire countryside soaked in the glorious sunshine, it’s the perfect spot for an ice cream to take it all in.

Bolsover Castle offers the ideal blend of history, fun events and incredible views. Whether you're a history enthusiast, an architecture lover, or simply seeking a picturesque day out, a visit to this magnificent castle promises a great day out.
