Creating your own Sleep Sanctuary

Did you know that we spend about a third of our lives in our bedrooms? We start and end every day with the view from our pillows, so the team at Stancliffe think it is definitely worth putting in some extra time and effort to make a restful, warm, cosy sleep sanctuary. Having a somewhere warm and inviting to curl up is a real treat, particularly at this time of year with the colder months.

Layering and textures play a key role to creating this cosy space, and in our view, the more chunky the quilt, blankets and throws, the better. When it comes to texture, we’re big fans of the chunky cable knits, but equally, lovely velvets and smooth linens can be great. It also goes without saying, the an unbelievably high-thread count cotton is an absolute dream and will transform your bed (and your sleeping). Especially important if you are moving into your new home and an unfamiliar space.

Wooden furnishings and accent pieces are one of those cosy bedroom ideas that look great no matter what your interior style is. The warm tone of the wood brings in a natural feel. In the bedroom below, we paired wardrobes with a wooden grain, with wooden bedside tables, a wooden dressing table and a super cosy, king size bed which blends both a lime washed wood with fabric upholstering. Pair a wooden wardrobe with an industrial-style metal headboard. In a new home, we think this can really help mellow out a bedroom, creating that perfect cosy feeling.

For bedrooms in new homes, lighting is often difficult to get right but the main thing here is to keep it soft. Whilst bare bulbs may be the standard in some bedrooms, we think opting for style which soften and diffuse light, together with some lovely bedside table lamps is perfect (with the added bonus of not having to get out of bed to switch it off, which is always a good thing).

Finally, in a smaller bedroom, we are big fans of wrap around headboards. In one of our recent show homes our designer created a wrap around headboard for the bed. The bed is placed in front of the windows in a tight nook that has a cocoon-like feel that is emphasised by the large wrap-around upholstered headboard. This is balanced with a colour palette of pale greys, pinks, and whites keeps it feeling light and airy.
