Autumn Walks in Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire

There’s something special about autumn. As the leaves turn golden and the air grows crisp, it’s the perfect time to wrap up warm, head outside and make the most of the countryside on our doorstep.

Whether you’re after a family-friendly stroll, a scenic trail with sweeping views, or a peaceful walk through historic parkland, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire have some of the very best autumn walks. Here are five of our favourites:

1. Clumber Park, Nottinghamshire

Once part of the Dukes of Newcastle’s grand estate, Clumber Park is now a National Trust treasure. With 3,800 acres of parkland, woodland, and lakeside paths, there are endless routes to explore. The autumn colours here are spectacular, and if you’ve got little ones, there’s plenty of space for them to run, cycle or scoot. Don’t forget to stop by the walled kitchen garden for seasonal inspiration.

2. Monsal Trail, Derbyshire

One of Derbyshire’s most iconic routes, the Monsal Trail follows a former railway line for 8.5 miles through the heart of the Peak District. With dramatic viaducts, tunnels and stunning valley views, this trail is a must in autumn when the landscape glows with colour. It’s flat and accessible too, making it a great choice for walkers and cyclists of all ages.

3. Wingerworth Circular Walk, Derbyshire

Closer to home, Wingerworth offers some beautiful countryside walks just south of Chesterfield. The Wingerworth Circular takes in woodland paths, open fields, and quiet village lanes, perfect for an autumn afternoon stroll. Look out for local wildlife and enjoy the peace of the rolling Derbyshire countryside.

4. Sherwood Pines, Nottinghamshire

No list of Nottinghamshire walks would be complete without a nod to Sherwood Forest. Sherwood Pines, near Edwinstowe, is the largest forest in the East Midlands and a brilliant place to enjoy autumn colours. With walking and cycling trails for all abilities, a Gruffalo sculpture trail for children, and plenty of picnic spots, it’s a family favourite.

5. Linacre Reservoirs, Derbyshire

Just outside Chesterfield, the Linacre Reservoirs are a hidden gem. Surrounded by woodlands that come alive with reds and golds in autumn, the three reservoirs offer a choice of short or longer walks, all with plenty of fresh air and photo opportunities. It’s peaceful, picturesque, and ideal if you want a quiet weekend wander.
